Exercising more choice over how you come across

Glasgow-based Alexander-Technique instructor Paul Marsh has just posted a great blog about the connection between our body language habits and the way people perceive us and respond to us.

More importantly, he shows how we can re-gain more control over this process by applying the Alexander-Technique:

Many people are unconscious of the postural habits that take over when they’re in conversation.

It’s often fascinating to be shown how you can exercise a greater level of choice over how you respond to situations, and to be less of a slave to unconscious habit.

This has far reaching implications, from improving posture (and ridding yourself of problems like a sore knee or back) to approaching situations of all kinds in a more spontaneous, fresh and creative way, including social situations.

(...) And if you practice Alexander Technique already, you’ll find it a bit easier to let your whole body just come into a natural, non-held state of poise.

If you don't make mistakes, you're doing it wrong. If you don't correct those mistakes...

SCIENCE:
If you don't make mistakes, you're doing it wrong.
If you don't correct those mistakes, you're doing it really wrong.
If you can't accept that you're mistaken, you're not doing it at all.

The Alexander-Technique in three sentences - brilliant!

The above text is a statement about science and scientific principles. But why is this also a spot-on definition of Alexander-Technique?

Well, F. M. Alexander always contended that the Alexander-Technique be a scientific method in the sense that it it uses reasoned-out hypotheses (in "Alexander-speak": the means-whereby with inhibition and direction) and put them to the test in empiric experiments (i.e. in daily life).

Do those hypotheses work reliably or not? Can the results be re-produced? If not, go back, check your hypotheses and make modifications!

More to the point: Learn to make mistakes!

F. M. Alexander even said (I paraphrase):

Don't come to me for lessons unless you're ready to make mistakes and be happy about it!

Much of the time we don't know why we do the things we do. Also, we don't know as much as we think we do about our futures.

Again another great »post on the Creature of Habit blog.

From the Alexander-Technique perspective I like the idea that our assessment of current events as well as of those in the future might be kinda "off" - or prone to "faulty sensory appreciation". So, knowing this, we might exercise some inhibition here
